Default checking the mileage on a junkyard cluster

hello i have a quick question i have a 98 jimmy i sometimes pull used parts at a local junkyard and i was wondering if anyone knew a way to check the mileage on a junkyard cluster like maybe hook up certain wires to a lawnmower battery or something like that to make it light up any help would be greatly appreciated

I don't know if there would be a way to do what you are asking, but I do know that when a dash cluster is replaced at teh dealership, and they order a replacement cluster, they have to tell them what mileage number to plug in to match teh existing one being removed. My new cluster picked up right at the same mileage number as my old one. So maybe you can get one from the salvage yard, and have it set to match your existing? Not sure how they even do this exactly, but only know that zit's possible.

should be able to depress the trip/odometer button with the system powered and it come on.
