Default Error on milage display

Hey everyone, long time reader first time poster. I have a 89 s15 jimmy 4.3l. Everything on the dash is working as it should except for the milage, It only displays "error". Unfortunately I am not with in walking distance to the truck, it's about an hour north of where I live. Just looking for ideas. Hope somebody on here can point me in the right direction. Thank you!

The IPC is tough for the shade tree mechanic because most of the information is communicated on the single wire Class 2 serial data bus. Its a stream of ones and zeros with every module talking on the line simultaneously. About all you can do is look at the data line if you have a scope and make sure the data stream looks OK. If that bus were being corrupted by say a bad module then other things would be wrong. If your scanner can read live data without issue then this is not likely happening. That leaves you with either a rebuild if available for these trucks or a trynostic IPC swap.
