Cool Short in battery, Why

I just got this 1997 Chevy Blazer and we notice that when you
try to start it, it won't if we take the cables off and charge the battery and leave the cables off all night, the car will start, does that mean the battery is alright and could we have a short in the
wires and is there a history of this with the blazers.

Or as I just learned reading the owner manual, it has four letters for the key, A, B, C, D. If it was left on in the wrong place, could that give that short the battery?
Thank you,
Barbara
