Im a member of a different trade union and I have herd some are more difficult to get into than others. In my experience (i started as a permit worker), my local hall gave me a membership handbook with collective agreements and union 'bylaws'...(and some propaganda lol.) There was a lot of history and rules explained by reading that stuff that gave me a better understanding of how all it works . As permit you pay dues and get most or some benefits. My advice is to try to talk to a manager or a job steward for your particular local.... hope some of that helps and feel free to shoot me a question.
