Can someone help me out?
Ok I know this is the completely wrong forum for this but maybe someone can help. I have a 1986 Pontiac Fiero 4cyl automatic and recently a tranny cooler line broke and all the fluid poured out. I fixed the line put new fluid in and tried to drive but it wouldn't move until the engine rpms were around 4000 and even then it couldn't make it up the tiny slope of my driveway. Any input would be great i'm an engine guy and know nothing really about trannies.
Sounds like your a little low on fluid.
Last summer i popped my tranny line out in the woods..dumped 5 qts
filled it back up and all was good once i had enough in there..had to top it off little by little.

def low on fluid , very bad to rev it with no fluid . also remember when your checking the fluid make sure the car is running // happend to my friends 69 vette after we put the motor back in just fill her up and she should be good
Sure you do. Park, reverse, neutral, drive, etc are all gears. That's what everyone means.
Put the car in park, check the fluid. If low, add some. Run it through reverse, neutral, etc all the way down pausing at each one for a second. Then make your way back up to Park. Give it a few seconds (all with the motor running) and check the fluid again.
Keep doing this until you're full, at which point the trans should shift properly and the car should run right. If not, you've got some trans damage. Could be as simple as needing a fluid/filter change, or it could be more in depth. But definitely make sure you do the fluid thing first.
