You have to have a pistol permit issued by the county you reside in...

i have a friend who is currently starting the permit process down here on Long Island. The best thing I can think of is go to a gun store or possibly the local Police Dept and ask them. Do it right and don't screw around. http://www.ehow.com/list_6774275_new...-handguns.html

So glad I don't live on the East Coast. I can buy any firearm, short of a full auto, and all I need to do is show my DL, fill out a short form and wait a few minutes for the back ground check to come back.

Looks like I'll never be moving to NY state, that's for sure!

Damn right dont, trust me i got arrested and charged with a felony 3 possesion of a firearm here in pa for my own pistol, because i decided to take my legally registered firearm to a pistol range for some target shooting on 1 of my days off, on my way home i got pulled over now before i go any further the pistol was a springfield armory xdm .40 cal it was in a locked gun case in the trunk with no magazines & no ammo the mags were in the glovebox and the paperwork was also in the glovebox they treated me like i had shot and killed someone worst part was i had made it 10 miles back and was only 2 city blocks from my house they took me to pittsburgh county jail lol and they towed my lexus to the pound as police evidence so trust me do not mess around about transporting a gun across any state line. when traveling with a firearm you are suppose to stop in every state you cross into's closest police barrecks to see what there laws are about firearms bunch of bull**** if you ask me what you can do with a unloaded firearm is beyond me, maybe use it as a paperweight maybe even a bookmarker :icon_urinal:Im much more dangerous with a breaker bar, tire iron i guess i could throw my $800 pistol at you if that counts....guess if you have a baseball you may also be charged and arrested lol i hate the east coast as soon as my charges are dismissed im goin down south where i can go to church with my firearms if i feel the need to

its the same as you described in PA,i can go into any gun store in
PA..show my DL,fill out forms, pass a state police back ground check..and i can have any # of guns, though semi auto :/...AK47s,ar-15s,pistols,hence why i love PA!..ny can suck a D!ck far as its restrictive gun laws go.

kevlar974 08-03-2011 06:21 PM

I second that AJBert.
Florida is still east coast but if you have a clean record you can own and carry almost anything.
And now we have the right to defend law so we can shoot back.
Welcome to the wild west part 2

well upstate ny you can buy shotguns or rifles in 15 20 mins but not handguns

we need permits for hand guns witch my parents have

in the city you need a permit to have any type of firearms in your household and also the triggers need to be locked and the ammunition has to be far from the firearms

Giovanni - Do you have sources for your information? Mainly what I bolded. Sounds like typical anti-gun/misinformed "facts" to me. How far is far enough for the ammo to be from the gun?

Generally we as Americans have fallen into the trap that has been set for us that guns are bad and only the police should have them.

I would say 85% of the people in PA don't realize that you can carry a firearm in plain sight (open carry) as long as you can legally own a firearm. Exceptions are schools and federal buildings (courthouses and post offices, etc.)

That being said, I would rather live/own a gun in PA than NY due to the stringent gun laws in NY.

OP be sure to do all your own research so you know exactly what to do. From my cursory research it appears you have to add the handgun to your NY permit and register it complete with a ballistic test-though I'm not sure if it's required for used guns or all guns after March 2001. See why it's important to do your own research? Lol

I know some states require that when transporting, the firearm and ammo must be in separate containers like, glovebox/passenger-cabin/trunk or as far apart as possible within the vehicle. Perhaps it's a similar statute in NY for homes.

Also, for anyone interested, here is a good site for researching various laws.
Handgunlaw.us

It's focused on handguns but in most states it lists all gun laws. The guy that runs that site is active on several, major firearm forums and is constantly updating it. There are also links on the site to state legislative websites where one can verify the data. Always best to double check for yourself so you don't wind up accidentally committing some sort of major crime like LowLife experienced.

you aint kidding man, The judge didnt even understand why i was arrested or anything he basically told the rookie cop in court" if you ever make a mistake this bad again i will have your badge" Getting arrested for having your registered gun in the trunk in the process ofcoming home from a pistol range is crazy....never been arrested in my life before that, have owned many guns and have never had a problem like that. Hopefully never again

thats insane i hate rookie cops also they can check if there registered or not in that little piece of crap computer they got in there cars.

any ways my dad got pulled over the other day and the cop said whats am stand for ? my dad has class A and motorcycle license and it stands for am. Any ways my dad turns around and says i can only drive in the morning once it hits 12 pm i park the truck and walk.

the cop got real pissed and almost locked us up
but the moral of this story is how do they send rookie cops out there that dont know left and right.

maybe im wrong but thats how i think of it

Definatly true, They dont even know the law. All they wanna do is try to make a name for themselves by harrasing honest hard working people, the police that are out there doing there job by the book thanks to you guys, But the ones out there who dont know the law to save there life shouldnt be there

maddie's dad 08-06-2011 09:30 PM

Here in the wilds of Colorado, they give guns away as toys at McDonalds. Just kidding. Rifles and shotguns are easy, just a background check and you pretty much have a sale. Pistols are pretty much the same except you have to be 21. I don't know about registration here in CO, I guess because they don't require it. The only place that requires registration here is the Military installations. The only reason I register with them is because my family and I get to use the shooting range for free.
It is one of the the nicer courtesies they extend to us retardees. I mean retirees.
I'm working on getting a concealed carry permit. No big hurry tho.
As far as crossing state lines with a weapon, I have not tried or needed to yet. Regardless, I would be super careful and make sure I did not break any laws even by accident or ignorance. That would truly suck to have my guns and the right to carry them taken away.

Thor_449 08-06-2011 11:26 PM

Indiana has some gun laws but is approx in the middle of both radical sides, MI is the same way although I have found If your trying to cross over into canada through a marked checkpoint on foot while carrying a .50cal anti tank rifle they don't really let you into Canada. We were hunting in the UP and decided to try to walk to Canada, the mounties stopped us but had no problems when we let them try to cut down a tree as long as they stayed in Canada and we stayed in the US....so the gun could travel borders but we couldn't accompany it across....kinda a wtf with a chuckle moment

AJBert 08-06-2011 11:35 PM

I travel every year from the south to CO for hunting and carry usually 5-6 different firearms in the back of the blazer. I also carry the ammo needed for each one. There is literally no way to have them in separate "compartments", as most state laws read. I have each firearm in a separate case and the ammo for all in a separate case. I've never worried about getting pulled over.

Of course, this is during hunting season. Or it could be because of my base stickers on the windshield. Or because I have somewhat of a background in law enforcement and know how to talk with LEO's. Or because I follow the speed limit (well, may add a few MPH's).

And Maddie's Dad, I am one of the retardies just like you!
