Default Hm! 02' ford escort for $500 buckaroo's...

So friend of mine has a escort shes selling for 5 bills. She knows nothing about cars but says it jerks when it shifts(automatic). So im guessing tranny is about shot. Cars got 135k on it. Pretty clean too. I dont really want it myself, but my brother needs a car and is on limited funds. She said he could pay her a $100 a week so he can afford it.

Question is it worth risking? Checked around and a trans is 600 bucks for it. Im hoping its maybe just needing a fluid change etc. Doubt it though. transmissions suck. Might be worth it having the trans rebuilt for 1200 bucks and having a decent everyday car. It had a timing belt replaced last summer,as well as new brakes around it. value of the car is around 3k running.

Thoughts? Im not much of a ford guy,but i know some of you may know more about these trannys then i do.

well if you fix it up for a decent price it sounds like you could still turn it and make a good profit...sounds like a potential win...win to me.

Sounds good to me. And the trouble description isnt exactly usual for a shot transmission.
Heh... sound like old 'modulator' problems.. so it could just be a bad TPS. Could be something that could be fixed with a dose of trans x or Lucas.

Might wanna sign up the appropriate forums and see if there some insight there

You should buy it. Worse comes to worse you can drag it around in the mud w/ your Blazer and a tow strap then scrap it. Kidding. I would go for it. I doubt the tranny is shot.Probably just needs a fluid change and filter.

Yea. well i talked to my parents to see if they wanted it and my mother said she may buy it if its clean and the engine runs good and throw a new trans in it and drive it till it pops. So either way i guess im stuck doing a filter/fluid change soon lol.I almost wanna take it to a shop and have them do a whole trans flush. worse comes to worse is a new trans, which is in near future anyways. Anyone ever done business with aamco before?

pettyfog, "modulator".....you talking about a solenoid in the trans? When i think modulator i think about the vacuum ones from old 350/400 turbos.lol

That's why I said it sounded like an old mod problem... or bad throttle position linkage. Why I said it could be TPS.

I wouldnt let aamco check the air in my tires. But they are still in business so they must do enough right to survive.. oh wait.....

Alright. ugh so i went to test it out.....1st thing i did was checked the fluid on the dipstick...Man ol man.....dark brown. copper looking residue on the tip of the stick. I started the car up,ran pretty good. kinda idled up and down for a min,but thats no big problem. My concern was the trans. Putting it into drive you feel absolutely nothing. I pressed gas and nothing happens until the rpms hit around 2300. its like having a high stall then it catches and goes. As i got it to accelerate it was bucking a little and then smooths out once i got into 2nd gear. I floored it and it took off. just as soon as im back in 1st it goes it ****. That copper looking residue looks to be clutch material or something. im pretty sure this thing needs a trans...Now do i wanna go through the headache of a used trans,or spend 1500 on a rebuild..

im not up for this...but im tired of driving my brother to work.
