Is it possible it could have been road debris? How'd you catch it? Thank god you did tho that could have been really bad!!

Looks like it had an impact there. It got bent in & creased the metal.

I havent looked at it in good light...was late when i fixed it. I only found it because she kept it running while i went into the store and when i came out there was a 8 inch diameter puddle under the car in a place there shouldnt be. I always glance under my cars when i get in...just as i walk up. Paranoid i guess....but it paid off last night.

edit.

ok i looked at it...i cant see any hits or creases in the filter. i doubt road debris...it is the 4.7 and the filter is tucked up there really high. i looked in the bay around the engine to see if maybe something did get up in there and bounce around...found nothing.

At first glance it looks like a crease but the dark spot running vertically is oil. It got a little hole in it. Did you prime the filter at all?

nope...filter is STP.
i always fill the filter (just the way i was taught).
i dont know what happened to it. the hole after i cleaned it up looks like a needle was stuck into it.

the dimples in the pic are just from the top of the filter being dimpled the way they all are.

STP filters are IMO one of the worst. They have a plastic web core and they collapse, not to mention the thin casing. My dad used to use them and he had 2 fails before he took my recommendation and switched to Wix. O'riely's MicroGard and Wal-Mart's Supertech filters are trash as well with the same plastic core's. You can't go wrong with a Wix or Pureolator.
