10-78 edac, Hello
Hi, I'm ed the a/c repair man. I picked up a 98 4door 4wd red blazer LS. Live in the greater Chicago metro area.:icon_special:
|
Welcome
|
Welcome from New York.
|
:icon_banana:So, it's been a while so I thought I'd up date. Replaced rotted brake lines with stainless ones. Four new ball joints. Four new "Gabriel Ultra" shocks. A T-bar crank back to stock settings. New sway bar links. And tightened play in power steering gear box. Now it's time for tires, the 04 goodyears are showing some dry-rotting even though they have 40% tread. Was looking for some suggestions before I go for an alignment.
Love this forum, I've learned and laughed alot(Urban off roading) |
Welcome from the utah.

|
Welcome to the forum looks like a pretty clean truck.

Where Elwood picked up Jake
|
So I let my daughter use the Blazer for awhile and she accidentally found out it has remote start :icon_banana:
|
recognized that prison the moment I saw it, then I noticed there was a blazer in the picture, nice truck man, and the original Blues Brothers is probably my favorite movie of all time
|
How do you accidentally find out it has remote start?
|
hey, right on Blues Bros., good ol Elwood is from Kingston, just an hour east of me.
the "get-away" Blazer is ready for the break-out. cheers, Jim |
Friend of mine bought the blazer new, after his untimely demise I bought it from the estate. It was sitting for over two years when I got it. Cleaned it up and made it safe. daughter needed room for second baby, she was getting out of it carrying too many things at once, and the thing started up on it's own. Please don't tell my wife though, she wants remote start in her Saab

There's storage in the hitch

Picked up a new hitch at bone yard, $30. Never liked the wires hanging under the hitch.

So the front door was rattling, took off the trim, seat belt, and striker.
Cut some heavy gauge sheet metal and bent. Secured in place from behind with wood blocks locked in place with tapered shims. Welded in place, and put out burning shims. Removed blocking and welded all cracks, making sure I penetrated through to the patch. Grinded down excess weld. then grinded some more. Till it looked almost like original. Primed, filled imperfections with caulk, and painted. Pictures don't show it but I also cleaned up weld, primed and painted inside the pillar. Waiting for paint to dry to re-assemble. |
So I swapped out my cluster and my odometer went from 110,000 to 190,000. I thought this was a display and mileage was stored in the comp. Can I get back to my original milage?
|
Man, That sucks. Try disconnecting the battery?
|
Welcome from MN.

New front hubs last weekend, P1860, P0740, and P0785 this weekend.
So after reading a bunch of threads, I'm still confused. and to top it off the drivers window stopped working also. |

Anybody know how to reset this to actual mileage?
|
:(To day I started on the intake manifold gasket.
|
And done. intake manifold gasket, plugs, and wires. That was less then pleasant.

Ed,
First I want to say that is a sweet looking cluster. Where'd you get it? Did you ever fix the odo? I was thinking that maybe you should call the manufacturer of the cluster and them why it changed? Also, wanted to ask if you followed the torque down procedures for your LIM? It's very important. I used to think that it was important to prevent warpage of the the LIM. While I assume it could cause that also, I also read in a GM Technical Service Bulletin that the reason for the procedure is for your main bearings. "IF INLET MANIFOLD ATTACHING BOLT TORQUE AND TIGHTENING SEQUENCE ARE NOT STRICTLY ADHERED TO, PER THE SERVICE MANUAL, CRANKSHAFT MAIN BEARING BORE ALIGNMENT CAN BE DISTORTED WITH CRANKSHAFT MAIN BEARING FAILURE BEING THE END RESULT." Apparently the bore distorts enough that it can close up some of the clearance between bearing and crank/rod journals not to allow the thin film of oil than the surfaces should be "floating" on. Just wanted to let you know. That could have been what happened to an engine I am replacing because of bearings. |
^ Good bit of info, rockp2. I had a shop do mine in Dec... It was a little bit of an ordeal doing that job, glad I didn't attempt it, although I did pay handsomely for said job.. ugh.
Mileage correction - You're gonna want to find someone with a Tech2 tool if you want that corrected. |

Got the cluster from another forum member, sorry the name slipped my memory. Yes I did torque everything to the proper specs. I just hope everything else on the rotating assembly is OK. Flushed rockers and valley with degreaser and re primed with oil. will change oil again this weekend.
I was curious, ball park me what it would cost to have it done, how many hours does the book say? |
alldata shows 3.4 hrs +.2 for a/c option..
|
lol...this "welcome" thread has turned into a build thread. perhaps a MOD would move it for 10-78.
|
I don't have power in this forum but I just sent a request for its move to the build section!
|
is there a "to keep it on the road" section
|
My intake job I was charged 3.2 hours.. I have A/C as well. The intake also was pitted/corroded a bit evidently in a couple spots. Tech had to add a little bit of epoxy after cleaning it up.. something I wouldn't have known that needed to be done if doing the job myself. The Fel Pro gasket set I was charged $101 for. I haven't checked to see what it cost to buy myself. Then a new T-stat, coolant, 4.5 qts of Amsoil.. plus while the job was being done I ran and grabbed a new serpentine belt as well as a new Delphi cap & rotor. The job wasn't a real cheap ordeal.

It's time
Any one need a nice 98 four door?
|
The truck has been sitting for 8 months, thew a new battery in it a took it for a spin.
I really got to let this one go. Anybody want a 4 door 98? It comes with a spare front clip, a spare freshly rebuilt trans, spare transfer case, new body flare kit (NOS still in box), and a "Blazerforum" tailgate sticker. |
