Drivers door lock not working on 2000 Chevy Blazer
Hi Everybody,
I have a 2000 chevy blazer that has a problem with the door lock. My door is opened but since the latch is in the locked position (facing down) it will not lock. (i have to use a bungi cord to hold my door locked if I drive it. Right now it's a pain so I'm using my mom's car. It's been two days & I know she will need it back soon).
My problem with my door lock is kind of hard to explain but I read a thread from someone else and it suggested using some dw-40 (oil grease stuff) on the latch to try to loosen it & move it back up, or using a hammer and a big screw driver to pound it back up. I tried it all & nothing seems to help - it's jammed down in the lock position. I called a mechanic, he is not an auto body specialist but I know he charges a reasonable price & wont rip me off. After he pulled my door shut a few times only for it bounce back opened I showed him that the latch was in the down position so he suggested I get a door lock actuator motor.
I'm not sure I need this. Do you think I just need to get a new latch? When I press the door lock button it unlocks all of my doors except for the driver side so I wonder if it's really needed. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. -Thanks!

Hey Everyone, don't worry about this. I found an auto body guy to fix it for me. The funny thing is he did exactly what I tried but the only difference was that he held the door handle up while he pushed the lever up. So less then 1 min. & too much money later he fixed it. It cost a pretty penny but in the long run it cost less then what I would have spent getting a part I didn't need & he saved me 3 days of having to borrow my mom's car. So now I'm back to cruisin in my blazer. - Chow

I can only imagine what someone would charge you to do this simple 20 second repair.
For those that may have this problem in the future, a screw driver is all you need to fix it. Basically, somehow the latch got closed while the door was open. All that is necessary is to hold up on the door latch handle while you push the latch itself to the open position. It is VERY easy.

Hi Everyone,
(I didn't get a chance to come back to the site yesterday because after my car got fixed I spent most of my day on the road. I got her a car wash, filled her up, then burned rubber). So I know it's late but thanks for the warm WELCOME. I'm so glad I found this site. There's a ton of good info. here & everyone is so nice & cool!

Mikeinwi - yesterday was my first time on the site so I didn't know where to post. It took me forever to find where to post that message.
All the other places I clicked; like in general & mechanical help-said I needed administrator rights & then from the new user screen I thought I read that I had to post in the new members section for 6-10 times before I had rights to post anywhere else. I may have read it wrong because I know I was rushed so I really wasn't taking the time to read everything. Oh well, maybe I'll get it right next time.
-Hope U have a good one :0)

swartlkk - you were the biggest help of all. I remember seeing your advise that you offered on this site to someone having a similar problem with my exact same car only his was a 1997. I tried exactly what you said except I didn't hold the door lever up which is why that latch wouldn't budge despite my banging that screwdrive with a hammer. I wish I would have figured it out.
(I wasn't going to mention the price I paid but since you asked it was $25.00 - OUCH!!!) And you're right it only took seconds! My mouth was still on the floor when he did exactly what you said.
The only thing that helped me be cool about it, is that if I bought the part it would have cost me $70.00 for the part & then $20.00 for the installation, & on top of that I would have still been waiting a couple of days for my ordered part to be shipped, so all-in-all I did OK.
-Well take care & thanks for sharing your smarts... :P

Oh yeah - Just to give you guys an update on the ending to this drama. Yesterday I called the mechanic who insisted that I needed to get the part to fix my car. When I told him it was fixed & I didn't need the part. He was speechless for a long time & then he said it looks like he learned something new. (LOL)
