Default Hello Everyone from Southern California. '95 S15 Blazer 4X4 & '83 K5 Blazer Silverado

Hey all,

I'm a newbie on this forum and hope to learn and contribute lots of good info. I currently have 2 Blazers. One is a 1983 K5 Blazer 4X4 with a 5.7L 350, 700r tranny, NP208 t-case, 3" Body + 4" Suspension w/ rear blocks, 35" tires, 10 bolt/6 lug front and rear, '91 front clip, & power seats from a '99 tahoe. The other I just picked up today. It's a stock 1995 S15 Blazer 4X4 with a 4.3L Vortec 4dr with about 165K on the clock and super clean.

I bought the '83 K5 in April and have been working on it, but I really wanted a '69 (or at least pre '75) because I live in CA and I don't want to have to worry about emissions control. So far I've had to replace the Universal Edelbrock carb that was on it with a Q-jet so I could hook up a bunch of sensors to pass emissions. I've replaced almost every sensor on it, put on a catylitic convertor, and then took it off after passing smog, I basically re-did the entire exhaust system. It runs great, looks bad-***, and it's a great truck, but it just needs too much work to get it to the point where I want it to be. Since my girlfriend is using my Honda Civic as her commuter now, I've been using the K5 to get to work, (100 miles round trip), so I've decided that I'm just going to sell it. This is why I decided to buy the '95 S15 Blazer today.

As for my "new to me" '95 Blazer, it runs good and is very clean inside and out, even under the hood and under the chassis. I don't know that much about the 4.3L Vortec engines, and what problems to look for, so I'm hoping to get some good advice here. Any projects I do on it I will document and post to help others. So far, from the research I've done on this truck, it seems like the common problems are (rough idle) the EGR valve needs constant cleaning and attention, Oil lines seem to go out every couple of years, and the Heater Core gets clogged causing no heat. I checked out the truck and it seems like I'll need to clean or change the heater core because the fan works but I get no hot air, the a/c seems to need a recharge but it clicks on, The idle seems to be a little rough but the EGR looks brand new, so I'm not too worried about that for now. I'm considering putting in an MSD ignition coil and distributor, and chipping it. I'm not sure what the best chip for it is though. I've seen them priced everywhere from $20 to $400+ so I'm not sure which one to get. I might put a suspension lift on it, not sure yet.

If anyone can give me any tips on things to look for or products that rock, let me know. Thanks, and I look forward to being a part of your forum.
-Josh
