New to the forums- 00 ZR2 in Vegas
Hello folks,
After lurking for the last month, and reading a slew of info (which has come in pretty handy, BTW) I finally pulled the trigger and bought a 2000 Blazer ZR2 last weekend. I had a pleasant 450-mile road trip home from Salt Lake with the new wheels last Sunday, and have been tinkering, tweaking, and improving ever since.
Back in the day (a couple vehicles ago), I had a 2000 Sonoma 4cyl/5-speed, so the dash/interior is all pretty familiar. However, the V6, front suspension, and transfer case are all new to me, so I'm still getting accustomed to it. Oh yeah, and a back seat where the person doesn't have to sit sideways
After I bought this truck, I found a couple of tiny (hairline) frame cracks near the rearmost lower a-arm mount on the driver side, which from reading seem to be a bit common on the ZR2's. I can't tell if it's worse than that until I tear it down, but I'll be getting it taken care of in the next couple weeks. (Gotta love having friends with welders!) I figure it'll also be a good time to do the ball joints and bushings, since it will all be apart for the welding. I know at least two of the ball joints are still riveted in, so I'm in for a real treat. I just replaced a rather loose idler arm yesterday, which cured a good bit of the wander that I had in the steering. The tie rods and pitman arm seem nice and tight. I was quite surprised to see the idler arm had the GM part number on it, as the truck has 148,000+ miles on it. It was allowing the right inner tie rod to have almost half an inch of wiggle, so it was toast. The right front tire shows the results of the failed idler, unfortunately.
Now, it's on to diagnosing the slight whiff of coolant odor I get occasionally through the HVAC. The heater core is already bypassed, so it's time to scour the engine bay for a leak.
Anyway, I wanted to say thanks for the great wealth of info on here! Hopefully I'll be able to contribute something of value to this community, but you folks seem to have it all down already.
And as a newbie on here, I'll now take the newbie pledge: "I, (state your name), vow to use the search function before blindly asking questions. I also vow to not create multiple threads for the same topic."
Bye from Vegas!
Matt
