Default New Guy With a Fixer Upper

Hey there.

New Guys here. Recently purchased as of this past weekend a 1997 Chevy Blazer. It's got a few mechanical problems, but nothing I felt uncomfortable attempting.

Been wrenching on my own cars since about Highschool, but really got into it after college in 2013, when it became a necessity to keep costs down and motors working. Been using places like this as a resource since to help diagnose and fix issues, so here's hoping you guys can help. I'll probably make a "Project" thread in the appropriate section later today after work. Just wanted to introduce myself.

Oh, and show off a photo of the Blazer in question after I got her home last night.

See y'all around~!

Welcome aboard! It's been said that if you weren't a mechanic when you bought one of these, you soon will be. But if it's in fairly good shape and you maintain it, I think you will find these to be good, durable trucks. Enjoy!

Welcome! GreenBlazer2002 is right; you have to want, and perhaps better enjoy, working on Blazers to keep these rigs running. They are very capable but are getting a bit long in the teeth.

Be sure to check out the threads that discuss the common issues with these. The one I pass on to new owners because it can ruin your engine with no warning is the catastrophic failure of the lower intake manifold (LIM) gaskets. When they fail, they dump water into the lifter valley and ruin your crank bearings. As soon as I learned about this, I was so spooked by it, I replaced them immediately. Most all other issues/failure modes give you warning and do not ruin the rest of the rig.

Much Obliged Christine! I'll add the Lower Intake Manifold Gasket as a repair item then, and make it close to priority one! Having looked at some vids on it, would make sense to just do it alongside some of the other parts I planned to replace.
