Hey, guys. I just wanted to introduce myself here instead of creating a new thread. My girlfriend and I just bought the '96 Blazer pictured with 206K for $1200. We got it because she wanted something with 4WD to replace the minivan that needs exhaust work that we don't want to deal with. Well, long story short I found out the 4WD doesn't work AFTER the paperwork was signed, so now begins the first project of replacing the dash selector panel and putting in a manual actuator cable for the front diff (since it would appear that the wires for the electronic actuator shorted out and caused a small fire in the engine bay at some point). The next year will be spent trying to keep it a fairly reliable daily driver for her while keeping our other two cars running (I have a '97 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer and we may end up keeping and eventually fixing the aforementioned '00 Mercury Villager minivan anyway).
After her tax refund next year, she will be buying a better car, and the blazer will be mine to do with as I wish. Some preliminary ideas I have are as follows (depending on feasibility and cost involved):
1. 2.5 inch Rough Country lift (or something similar) with 31" tires on 15" wheels
2. front and rear axle swaps (maybe 8.8" rear and Dana 44" front)
3. manually shifting transfer case swap (if possible)
4. small block/manual transmission swap (at this point I'm probably reaching the limit of what even makes sense for an S-10)
5. whatever else might as well be done to make the above combo a drivable machine on the street as well as off road.
We'll probably sell both the minivan and the Explorer prior to me starting the Blazer build, and I'll be getting a 5-speed Subaru to handle my daily driving duties. No, I'm not terribly brand-loyal, but I have a general dislike of Chrysler products. I do, realize, though, that every make has its good and bad models and product runs. Anywhoo, I've already found some good threads on the manual actuator conversion and lift kit options and other things that will help me, so I'm sure I'll be back on here often (especially after the buildup begins).
