Off Roading in Sweden
Some pics from recent trips
https://i68.tinypic.com/120icd1.jpg https://i63.tinypic.com/2rfvo2b.jpg This place was a little fun to reach, long quite steep road facing north, so rather muddy and had to take the old axe out and cut down like a dozen of snow cracked trees 😊 https://i64.tinypic.com/bf49br.jpg |
Nice, impressive rapids. (snow melt?)
|
Very cool!
|
Thanks!
Exactly, at a nearby power station, its been a long snowy winter, and now its letting go from the mountains so they have 3 out of 4 ports open from the reservoir! |
What a beautiful Country ! I enjoyed my time there. Keep on truckin' and keep sending more pics !

The flow at the dam is about 28k cubic ft /sec!!
(800 cubic meters) |
Tonight we took a little trip down some backcountry roads, to some small woodland lakes. Nature here is all shaped by the inland ice sliding towards the sea a couple of millions of years ago! 🏔️

... From what you describe about the geology, it sounds like the country in Minnesota or up north of the there in Canada where there were great ice sheets too. |
🇳🇴 Probably 🇳🇴
Yes, if you look at the latitude, there is a reason why so many swedes ended up in minnesota and canada during the fatigue here a hundred years ago, i myself have relatives (my dads cousins) in alberta and edmonton, and my wife also has relatives "up north" 🇨🇦 🇺🇸 Geology is a growing interest of mine, due to my fascination for gold panning, so when the spring flood sinks away its time to load up the ol' Blazer with the highbanker, waterpump and shovels and go hitting the streams! |

Disaster strikes!
Hello! Its been a while since i was here 🙄 this year is going to the books as the worst ever here in Sweden! After the long cold winter we havent had any rain since may, just like one weekend in june, the result? Forest fires! Lots of them! Its been so dry i havent dared doing any offroadin'! Ad now we have 3 largefires just a couple of miles from the house!! The worst of them sometimes travels as fast as 30 feet/second but the wind is rapidly turning so it spreads in different directions all the time! Tonight its about 5000 acres of land burning in north south and west of where i live, although there is no immediate risk for us, a village about 20miles away with a pop. Of about 250 people is prepared to be evacuated! Here i a pic i took an hour ago on a mountain just 25 minutes away

http://i66.tinypic.com/20gy03r.jpg Skywatch Sweden You are not dealing with a "wild" fire ! Wow! Stay safe!

We have had/do have a number of wild fires here in Colorado and across the west. Closest was about 10 miles due south of the house, burned 1400 acres and 8 houses and a number of outbuildings (we live in the foothills of the Rockies between the front range and the divide).
Most of the fires here have been started by lightning and the others by humans. Very stupid humans I might add. One fellow started a fire about 75 miles south of us, has burned over 100,000 acres and over 140 homes. He's been in jail for a couple of weeks and is facing over 140 counts of first degree arson. Odds are he'll die in prison...hopefully. |
At least these fires were caused by lightning, some areas are so remote firefighters are struggling to get there! But with this dry summer i guess it would be enough with a cracked piece of glass or something to start a fire... Today two planes that can carry 1500 gallons of water are arriving from Italy to water bomb the area 👍

I have seen hot and dry summers in the North before. Hopefully the fronts start to move a bit more in the next week.
|
I'm still alive over here, most of the fires are still not under control, and they have also spread alot, so now they raging roughly 30000 acres just in our area, (altogether wildfires are roaring aver 50000 acres, an area 5 times bigger than stockholm, the swedish capitol) thats bad in a country where the government has spent the last 35 years cutting down everything! For example the swedish defense sold out our big twin rotor helicopters to USA (you bastards 😉 ) so now we have to lend both helicopters, waterbombing planes and firefighters from all over europe, which mean we'll have to wait (and let it burn) for about 48 hours before backup arrives... It's silly season
Well well, this has very little to do with offroading, but even event companies organizing quad bike tours, are banned from riding in the woods now, due to the risk of starting fires, and yesterday police arrested a guy for throwing out a cigarette from his car! 🚬 |
Hello, hello! Nothing new over here! The wildfires are put out, and totally there were about 60k acres of woods burnt down, but from what i heard that's absolutely nothing compared to how much has burned in the U.S.!! The only thing good that came out of this is that there are lots of miles of gates,,(i dont know if they are called 'fire gates' in american like here?) to explore with the blazer!
All best /Nils http://i65.tinypic.com/347frz5.jpg http://i67.tinypic.com/ae1i4h.jpg |
Good to hear from you. Yes it was pretty bad over here. The smoke made it so that you could not see over a mile away or worse.
"Fire gates" well kind of. In the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon) we have lots of logging roads that have gates on them that are sometimes kept closed or opened only certain times of the year depending on concerns over erosion or disruption of wildlife. They'll be re-opened for logging activities too. Happy exploring! |

Nah, not really how i meant, i thought about the 50-60 meters wide and 30 miles long firebreaks (?) which were cut, and cleaned by excavators in a landscape mostly made of gravel, soil and sand, not much rocks and so, must make great offroad ground 🙃 |

How's the fishing? Any good in those lakes and streams? That is one of the things my Blazer takes me to do, albeit too infrequently. Where I go is the mountains of northern Idaho where the cutthroat trout live. :-)

To reconnect to this question. -yes, tjeres absolutely some good fishing around here in the river in the first pic of the tread there was wild salmon until the fifties when it was several powerplant built here, i think it's four or five just downstreams from my place! And we also have bass, pike, brook trout and louch here.. Btw here is a riddle for you: how do you know you live in the woods? - the customer car your going to work on has a wheelwell full of bear ****!
https://i63.tinypic.com/dpep0h.jpg I once was on track to get a job in Pasadena at the Jet Propulsion Lab but I just could not see myself enjoying living there. |
I just noticed how much stuff i've got in the back!
http://i68.tinypic.com/wvrhw1.jpg Water pump, highbanker, hoses, buckets, canoe stuff, fire extinguisher, and Jerry cans! Btw, beware of dented Jerry's! one cracked for me, and i had almost a gallon of petrol in the rear carpet before i found it.. |
Its been a while...
Due to work, owning two houses, teenage kids and so, not much time has been spent in the Blazer 😢
But today i made a trip along some trails, and even had the go-pro going, so i will soon upload some film on Youtube! Best to you all! /Nils http://i65.tinypic.com/20uuy4w.jpg |
Lovely! :icon_wub:
So do they have in Sweden any bumper stickers like they do in New Hampshire (USA) that say "Brake for Moose It Could Save Your Life"? (of course our "moose" is your "elk" and most properly an älg) :) https://i0.wp.com/dearkidlovemom.com...size=539%2C130 https://newengland.com/wp-content/up...-sign-MEME.jpg |
Elk, moose etc.
We've got campaigns from the government via television and so. And at drivingschool at least here up north they teach about wild animals and their movements and so, otherwise its just these roadsigns with an elkpic on
http://i64.tinypic.com/nd8led.jpg Last summer i spotted these guys from the car window, about 70 yards, but i couldn't lower the window, thats why there is no quality in the picture.. Probably discussing the lack of females in the area👍 http://i63.tinypic.com/23iv42u.jpg |
Near where I live (The Palouse area of North Idaho) we have moose too but also have white-tail deer and elk (wapiti). I've come close to hitting deer and elk. The moose don't seem prevalent enough to be an issue. The elk though will travel in small herds and then group up into up to 60 to 100 head! When you get a small herd of elk crossing a road, there is easily more meat on the hoof than that in even one big bull moose! :)

We also have these small red bambi-style deer, iv'e had two accidents with these super fast critters shootin out in front of me! But both times i had my old volvo which was built tough, even compared to a sherman tank! Luckily no elk on the hood so far! But we also have a couple of these guys in the neighbourhood that keep the numbers of grass-eaters down😉 Pic taken just a mile from home http://i66.tinypic.com/ea11y9.jpg |
🎄Merry christmas to you all🎄
