Keeps mud/water from getting in through your air intake, well, if you have a good cover over it too. Really its so you wan go way too deep in water crossings and mud. Check out my vid, getting close to as deep as you would want to drive without one. Its 2-3 feet deep... (its through the Rio Grande river in my Blaze) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqvNcN_OPas
