Talking Steel Cable or Synthetic?

This will raise the temperatures here a bit ....

Can a synthetic rope be used to replace a steel cable on a winch drum?

WARN says: "No way! Don't do it; it ruins the winch!"

How come?

My opinion comes purely from observation as I don't have a winch on my truck, but I'd say that yes a quality synthetic winch rope can have benefits over a steel braided cable. I've seen first hand what happens when a steel cable breaks under tension. I've seen videos of synthetic ropes breaking under tension. The reduction in retained energy in a synthetic rope is enough to convince me that if I bought a winch, I'd strongly consider a synthetic rope.

Personally I haven't seen any reasoning I understand as to why a synthetic rope would be bad for a winch?
