Take care on the beach
Found these pics!
This incident was before a speed limit of 70kph was imposed. There are spots where there is soft sand. This guy got caught out & before they could get to him & pull him out the tide came in & did the rest. The beach stretches for about 30/35 kilometres.
By the way, if you're wondering why the beach sand is black - it's because the west coast is volcanic.

No choice. This was somewhere around 20km's up the beach.
There are only a few entry points to this stretch of beach, some of which is through the state forest & access is dependent on the tides. High tide = no beach in some places.
Get you timing wrong & you can be stranded somewhere & will have to wait for the tide to change, roughly every 8 hours, so to get a tow truck, up the beach, (or through the forest) recover it & get out - no chance.
If you google earth - Muriwai Beach New Zealand - you'll see there is a thin black stretch of beach between the ocean & forest. Some pics of the beach too.
