Roof Basket/Rack?

Alright before i lay it out let me state that one im newly married and two my current job doesnt pay crap so all my mods and work are either cheap, long saved up for or done with stuff i have laying around.

Alright so i really want a Roof Basket on my truck one of the ones that stretches from front to back for three reason 1.They look good 2. To mount some small off road lights to and finally 3. Some were to put my tent and sleeping bags whenn i go camping.
Now the problem! Those things cost up into the hundreds and i dont have that right now to spare, so ive been looking up ideas on home to make homemade ones and i ran across one on youtube that a kid built out of 1 1/2" PVC pipe and painted it and it actually looked good! I already know what some of you are gonna say "that thing wont hold any kind of weight or the sun will eventually break the pvc down and make it brital" , well its not gonna be holding anything except some lights and a tent and sleeping bags for the ride to the campgrounds and far as the durability factor i thought about coating the pipes in a hardening resin and then paint them with rhino liner! So my question is do you guys think that would work, whats your opinions on what you would do and what kind of off road lights do you recommened?

I would stay away from the pvc idea! For one like you said it will be very weak. You really couldn't secure anything properly with it cause if you tighten it down the pvc with break and if you don't tighten it enough well then your gonna need a new tent and whatever else you put up there. Its also really not cost effective if you figure out everything you will need. In the picture you posted without the lights there are approximatley 44 junctions and then all of the straight tube. I haven't looked up cost on them but lets say they are $2ea. Thats $88 plus the straight pieces lets say another $20-25 plus glue and paint $15. Thats just a rough estimate but thats still around $120-130. I would say stay patient and keep searching everyday and you will find something:) Ive read good things about the Harbor Freight lights so for the money they are good to go! I have Procomp lights on my truck and I love them. I paid (well my wife paid) $120 for the 5 I have on my truck so arguably they are still a cheap light compared to say a KC or Hella light.

Well i was mainly gonna do it for looks and the pvc actually wouldnt cost me anything because my uncle has half a shop full of pvc and stuff lol but im probably gonna wait and just save momey for a few weeks and order me one, and i like both of yalls lights! Thanks for the input guys!

SportRack brand (Thule's economically challenged line) with 1 extension. I think there was like 150ish invested at the time when it was purchased (in 2 separate purchases as funds allowed. base basket then the extension later. Actually looked fine with just the base basket on the 4runner we had before the Blazer, just a little cramped with a tire in it). Not sure what prices are at now bu tit's held up well now being on it's 2nd truck

Who's tits held up well lol!!! Sorry I had to:)

Mimes a 2 door so the stock rails are moved back and a little shorter so idk if i should just put the regular basket on there or put a basket and exstention so it comes out more towards the front of the roof. I just dont want it to sit back to far and look goofy

^Found this one on Amazon for $39

Looks like you may have to buy other roof rack parts to mount it to. Save for a week or 2 and get one like ours, comes with all hardware and mounts to existing roof cross bars

the roof rack is made from 3/4" conduit, if you have access to a welder you can weld up a basket yourself that will be more the sufficient for what you want. make plates that fit where the current holes are for your roof brackets, then use some square tubing to make pillers that go straight up from those brackets. weld another piece across the top. use some small U bolts to bolt your basket to the brackets. if you want to put your spare on the roof simply add another brace from the from to the rear bracket down the middle...and weld a long enough bolt right to it....make yourself a long enough wingnut too. anyways if you have a welder or access to one you can make yourself a hefty working rack for about 100$

Had to get rid of it because ww found out that my wife is possibly expecting and were gonna need all the extra room we can get.
