Im going to sand it down myself to save a little money. my question is im not going to get it paitned right away so if i sand it down now will it rust...is it ok to drive around iin a car with no paint..will my new paint job go on like crap because i drove around with no paint...or is it better to just sand it down when im ready to get it painted right after...thanx

I put my own paint job on my old beat up 87 pontiac 6000 last summer. Since it was a weekend thing I did the stripping/sanding and prep work one weekend, and painted about 2 weeks later. You want to at least put some primer on the paint, DO NOT leave any bare metal exposed. Down here in NC, it's pretty dang humid in the summer, so a bald metal spot would start showing rust by the afternoon.

My advice, strip it down, put on some primer, and any rust that starts to show up in the corners or anywhere else, sand it down real good and throw more primer on the spot.

just let the shop do it...seriously.... it will cost more if you bring a bare metal car into get painted. You don't sand off all the paint anyway, only places that have too get body work, dents pulled ect. To answer your question, yes, bare metal will rust and look worse that the old paint you got on now.
