My truck had the back windows tinted 20% from the factory so i matched the front windows.

My side glass has the factory privacy tint, but my backglass didn't cause the original was busted out and the replacement was tint free. IIRC I did 15 or 20% all the way around. Need to layer the back glass cause it's lighter than the sides. Did 40% on front side glass for legal reasons. Went with tint that has a metal layer in it and it's easy to see out off, not so easy to see into.

On mine, i have 20% on the front 2 right now, but my eyes are really sensitive to light so i can legally go whatever percent i choose (3 years of doctors notes, 6 years of it on file nationwide). so, i'm planning on going 5% over the rear 5, double layer 20% front 2 which comes out to about 10-15%, and 35% windshield... dark as heck, looks amazing, and keeps my electronics out of pansy a** thieve's eyes... i've had cars broken into for audio, cell phones, backpacks, heck even my darn blue polo

I have high blood pressure and migraine headaches, so I have sensitivity to light. But my doctor won't allow the tint "because of my age"...
Keep in mind Kingfiasco, if you've never had tint done before pay close attention to details. I thought I jut wanted the cheap film tape, untill I found out that if I splurged o lil on the tint with a metal layer it had benifits. Like the normal film can color wash to that nasty purple color over time, metal layered tint won't. Film tint normally only has like a three year warrenty, mine had a life time and the price diffrence between the metal and the film was around $50 total.
And they say you can have problems with electronics getting signal because ofthe metal in the tint. I have a all the glass tinted and a sunstrip across the windshield that comes down so far it's almost level with my eyes when driving. And I have ran radar detectors, GPS, and my iPhone and never had a problem with loading or signal.

How does the 40 look cause that seems pretty bright to be and how much more is the metal layer?

I admit the 40% looks pretty light during the day. But looks alright at night. Check lasws in your state cause yours might be diffrent. Honestly around here you can get away with darker tint as long as you don't get something extreme like 5%. But I have to get a modified Inspection sticker because of my body lift and oversized tires. A normal inspection takes about 15 minutes, my Modified one takes about 45, much more detailed. And some of them use the light meters on the tint if your getting a mod sticker, so I went the legal route.
I know people with stock vehicles with 2% that don't have a problem, my buddy has 5% and was rejected by several inspection stations before he found a place to inspect it. My old BMW was BONE STOCK except for 30% tint my cousin had put on it, and even though the law is 35% here, I got asked by cops during speeding tickets what % it was. Just depends.
I honestly think it was around $80 extra at my local tint shop from the normal film to the next up tint that I got. But you get piece of mind of a lifetime warrenty and the metal layer reflects a little bit, kinda like looking into a lake of water. So that makes it a lil harder to see in espically while parked at night. So for an extra 80 I got lifetime warrenty and a lil more privacy. Call some local shops and look up the tint laws in your area.
