Maybe change the PCV valve, and clean the EGR valve and the MAF sensor. These made a noticeable difference for me, and are quick, cheap and easy.

I also noticed improved fuel mileage after replacing the fan clutch assembly.

I'm in the process of troubleshooting the exact same problem on my 2000 ZR2 with no CEL's and engine runs great. Hope this helps.

Knock sensors are little microphones that screw into the block. These are monitored for preignition so that the timing can be adjusted by the ECU and prevent damage. They also can adjust the timing so that it can be advanced as much as possible without causing damage to maximize performance.

This is an incorrect statement. Your inexperience is showing! Christine had it right.

What is the mileage driven on each trip?
The lenght (or the shorteness) of the ride, especially in winter time can considerably lower your mpg.
Short trips <8 miles can increase fuel consumption considerably due to the enrichment at cold engine.

What are the average meteo conditions in the period you observed the low mpg?
Cold below freezing?

The 4.3 V6's are terrible on short haul trips in cold weather.

Thank-you Error_401, this explains everything.

My engine seems to get about 14 mpg in summer, but in winter it drops significantly. Without my notes, I would say 11 mpg or worse!

This is all city miles and all short trips, about 5 miles. The temperature is below freezing all winter, and averages -20 C or -5 F.
