Default performance upgrade for less than 500?

i know it isn't much, but gotta start somewhere when your only 17!

i would like to start upgrading my 1999 LT for off-road, and was wondering what would be the best upgrade to start off with for under $500. it's my daily driver, so it needs to be something that wont murder my MPG, and may occasionally run the 1/4 mile at countyline dragway...

the first thing i found that sounds ok is a magnaflow catalytic converter, but i've also heard about changing the computer chip in the engine, but that sounds risky to me...

Im confused, do you want a performance upgrade or a sound upgrade? I'm pretty sure you wont get any more performance out of an exhaust, it will just sound nastier. If you get a full system including headers, then you would get some performance out of it.

Actually, headers don't do much for these trucks besides change the exhaust tone. Thats what Brett said after he did it on his. A catback however will possibly give you a noticable gain. Call PCM4Less and get a tuned PCM sent to you. More HP and better MPG. Also, check eBay for a cold air intake or get the Spectre one since it has a heat shield.
