Default Using Temp Gauge for Trans Temp Reading

Has anyone used a stock K5 Blazer temperature gauge to measure transmission temp? I have no clock in the dash of my 1986 K5 and would like to try to mount a spare engine temp gauge in the blank spot to measure transmission temp. Has anyone tried this or seen instructions? It can't be difficult but I don't want to reinvent the wheel if it's already been done.
