I'm hoping a local dealer will trade this car for the ZR-2.

That's a good looking SS. It even has the High Sport option. If it's in good condition with no mechanical problems I'd trade the ZR2 straight across in a heartbeat. You'd be coming out way ahead on the deal. Not only will you have better performance and mileage, but the Monte has a higher blue book value. I say go for it!
The 5.3 was only available with the '06 and '07 SS models. The '00-'05 SS came with a 3.8 V6 or a supercharged version of the 3.8. FWD performance car = fail? You should check out ZZ Performance, 3800 Performance or a few of the other places that cater to the W Body with V6 engine. Heck, a 3.8 NA in a '00-'05 Monte will smoke a 4.6 or 5.0 Mustang all day long.
