4 wheel drive switch keeps failing

Hi everybody....I'm sure hoping someone has a clue about this:
The 4 wheel drive switch on my 98 Chevy Blazer has been replaced twice. Now the same noise is back....once a week or less there's a sound that sounds like a low flying plane...when I stepped on the brakes and come to a complete stop it goes off. Or if I switch into 4 wheel drive the sound stops also. The switch was replaced in August 2009 and again in June 2010 but only after the sound started and would not stop. Until that happens no one can find a problem. The sound started in August 2005.
I haven’t tried anything because no one can find the problem until the sound won’t go off anymore when I step on the brake or switch into 4 wheel drive.
The car is well-maintained and AFAIK has no other problems.
This has been going on since August 2005. Until it failed the first time the car was driven 6000/miles/year and the noise would occur a few times/month or less. In 2009 I drove the car an extra thousand miles so I thought that’s why the switch finally broke and could be fixed. But since then the car has only been driven the usual 6000 miles/year. I have heard the noise again about 4 times since December 15th. Coming to a complete stop turns it off....I haven't had to switch it into 4 wheel drive...that only starts being needed after it's been going on for awhile.
The current mileage is 79, 155
I need to know what is causing the switch to fail so it can be fixed before it fails again and leaves me stranded 100 miles from home like happened the second time.
My mechanic checked it several times before it failed the first time with no idea what the problem could be. I also asked the local Chevy dealer who was less then worthless other then saying we’ll take a look at it for who knows how much they would charge.
So if anybody has read this far I‘m hoping a light bulb went on and you can give me an idea what the problem could be!!!
Thanks so much,
Anna

OOOPS, I put in the wrong mileage.....it should be 79,155 not 170, 000. I'm going to change it in the original post too if I can.
I'm guessing some of you might be saying 'give it up' at such a high mileage...I'd be trading it in too
