Story is, it went into 4HI and would not disengage. When I replaced the encoder motor it automatically went into 4LO and I couldn't get it back into 4HI or 2WD. When I replaced the TCCM, that's when all went dead (so to speak.) Haven't got it to work since. When I replaced all the components, I did clean and spray all the connectors. Best time to do it when they were disconnected.

Good enough. Is the t/c shaft (NP233?) to the encoder splined or flat on two sides?

This how you checked for codes?

DTC Displaying

  1. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
  2. Connect PIN 13 on the data link cable (DLC) to a ground. The DLC is located in the cab under the instrument panel on the driver's side.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Observe the transfer case shift control switch select buttons for flashing codes.
Important: If the transfer case shift control switch buttons all blink only once and then stop, no fault codes are stored in the transfer case shift control module.
• When one DTC is stored in memory, that code will blink that number of times followed by a 3 second pause and then repeat.• If more than one code is stored, the first code will blink, followed by a 3 second pause and then the second code will blink.• This sequence will continue until PIN 13 on the DLC is no longer grounded.• If the TCCM will not communicate the presence or absence of DTCs, test the above circuits in Self-Test Step 2. If the circuits are complete, then replace the TCCM.

the encoder is flat on 2 sides. I checked for any codes on the DLC and one did come up. It flashes once followed by a 3 second pause, flashes once again followed by the 3 second pause, etc, etc,. No other codes.

By the way, I have started to replace electrical components again. Have replaced the TCCM and the encoder motor for a second time and still nothing. Thinking of replacing the selector switch on the dash again also. Drove it down the road and back and it is in 2wd but there is now a really bad vibration under the floor board where we sit. Guessing the transfer case I got is bad?

Lots of things can cause that vibration. From something simple like the exhaust to universal joints, transmission mounts, etc.

I'll see what I can find about the code,if it is one. HOPE the switch solves the problem. These 4x4 systems sure leave something to be desired.

Found this:
The error codes are:
1 - When the ignition switch is positioned to RUN the TCCM test to determine if RAM standby Power (maintained battery power) to the TCCM was lost since the ignition was last turned OFF. When power is interrupted on pin C6 of the TCCM, the TCCM stores a loss of RAM standby power.

Thanks for your help but I think I'm done messin' with it. I'm going to unplug the TCCM, pull the 4WD fuse and remove the front drive shaft. I'm making it a 2WD all the while saying a few choice 4 letter words and giving the "international sign" towards the engineers in Detroit.

Your quite welcome. Just wished we could have figured it out. Can't say I blame you for stopping. Even though our '96 is working fine I don't trust it. I'm just GLAD I've got a manual shift t/c in my Cherokee. Consider it a double "international" salute to Detroit.
