Default 88 K5: Slow speed turning probs in 4x4.

Hi, if I turn in 2WD at walking pace off the driveway or into a carpark space everything is fine. If I do the same thing in 4WD the steering wheel pulls from side to side as if I have a flat tyre or am in a rut in the road. I've never had a 4x4 so do not know what the steering characteristics are like when 4wd is selected. Thanks for any help.

This will happen with any 4wd vehicle that does not have a center differential. It is caused by drive train bind which results from having all four wheels follow a different path. As you turn, the wheels are all turning at different rates. With the front and rear axle solidly coupled in the transfer case, the front and rear drive shafts are required to spin at the same rates. What you are feeling is the tire with the least traction slipping to relieve the bind.

In other words... What you are experiencing is completely normal. You shouldn't normally drive your truck in 4WD on a hard dry surface. But it is good for it to throw it into 4WD about once a month if you can find a suitable road or trail.

Thanks guys. I only put it in 4WD once or twice a month to stop anything seizing up as it never gets used (not yet anyway) off road .
