Default 91 Blazer 4WD problem

Ok so I need some help...I'm not getting any 4wd. The weird part is that my shifter inside for the 4wd moves but it's like it doesn't want to stay anywhere near 4wd...either 2wd or neutral. for 4 high I have to kinda get it somewhere in the middle and for 4 low I have to hold it there or it springs back up into neutral. But doesn't engage the front at all, doesn't make any noise like it's even trying to...any ideas? Should it lock into position for 4hi and 4lo, meaning I should have to push the button on top of the shifter in to get it out of them right? Thanks guys!

i had a TC with similar issues.

it turned out to be worn out internals, and needed a complete rebuild. kinda PITA when it pops the TC into neautral when buzzing down the highway!

i just swapped in a wrecker unit. worked fine after that.

You can inspect the linkage to see if maybe there is anything wrong or possibly just out of adjustment, but beyond that, I'd say that it's an internal problem with the transfer case as well.

Also I just found today that I have a vacuum line coming off the "orb" and it goes back about a foot then has a tee in it...only problem is one of those sides of the tee isn't connected to anything...I'm just guessing but I'm assuming that that would cause a huge vacuum leak right? I should plug it right?

definately!

check around that tee fitting, you'll find the onther line kickin' around there somewhere.

wouldn't hurt to replace al of the vacuum lines while you're @ it. they're cheap to replace (by the 6 or 10' bulk box of it) and are probably the worst rubber hoses to deteriorate.

Sure enough it was there hooked that back up and replaced most of the vacuum hoses, still need to get the 3 from the transfer case but all the others are replaced. Engine runs quite a bit better. 4wd still doesn't work. I took the battery tray out and had my wife shift from 2wd to 4wd. No movement from the actuator...but...if i manually compress the diaphragm, the 4wd light comes on inside and I'm guessing the front diff engages. So I'm gonna change out the lines from the transfer case and see if that helps but if not then changing out the actuator is the next step right?

you sholud also pull off the diaphram from the cable, and inspect that cable as well.

i just replaced the vacuum diaphram on my youngest brother's '94 Jimmy a week ago (it had a tear) and i noticed the cable was stiff as molasses in January, which is weird, 'cause his 4WD work fine 'til the diaphram went south.

anyways, sprayed the crap outta the cable, moved it by hand for a bit, reinstalle everything, and sprayed it so more. was a little "sticky" for a few days when it was disengaging, but works fine now.

could be a sticking/frozen cable problem in combination with a vacuum problem.

are you having fun yet?

Fixed it...Turns out a tear in the vacuum hose to the switch will do it! And all new vacuum lines will fix it!
