I picked up a 2003 Blazer for the winter, and after talking to my cousin who drives one at work, it appears they lack for traction in the rear in 2wd I put 70lb tube sand in the rear but didn't seem to make much difference,

does anyone have any suggestions on making it better ?

 

Tires?

 

Well I don't believe it's tires My 03 has Master craft MT's on it a pretty aggressive tire, and my cousins 01 has Good year wranglers so there's a little bit of difference in treads I really think it's a weight or weight transfer issue, I'm just not sure how much I want to put back there ..

 

all you can really do is tires, or be lighter on the accelerator. I have sub, sub box made out of 3/4" MDF, and an amp in the back and it does not help either, also, keep your tank full, that adds quite a bit of weight.

 

70 pounds??? A full tank of fuel is only 140 pounds. If tires don't help, try adding 250 pounds, or maybe select 4WD

 

this is why 4wd was made. For traction. USE IT! =P

 

Try 4 or 5 sandbags, personaly I would just hit 4WD while needed.
If all you have is 2WD and sandbags aren't enough then Blizzak tires are amazing.

 

I disagree.... they suck on my company van... absolutely no traction in slush/wet snow... I would rather have studded tires (I put on about 5k mi per month)

 

I have the WS70's on my cobalt and thier night an day better than anything I've ever run before. There are a lot of times I have to use 4wd on the Sliverado(Revo's) and the Blazer(Dueler AT's) where the Cobalt just zipps up it. Steep drive 600+ feet as I live out of town a mile plus on a gravel country road 26 miles one way for work. Around town taking off from stop lights etc.. when slippery, slushy etc. I take off like nothing while everyone else is spinning thier tires. My personal experiance has been excellent. If the Blazer was only 2wd I'd have a set on there in a second.

Now on black/glare/wet ice...Sure studs are better but I've has reasonable results in those conditions. I generally worry about slowing down to fast and getting smacked from behind.

 

I have the same kind on my work van (2011 dodge caravan) and the van has way too much torque for the tires to grab with, in anything but light powder/fresh snow they really suck, my cavalier was a better tank with cheapo winterforce studded tires on it..... I usually run at the GVW limit with the van and stopping is difficult sometimes. I would feel 100 times safer with a set of studded nokians.....
