Looking at buying an old K20 pickup..

Not exactly sure on what it means by having a floating 1 ton axle in the rear...?

I know what an axle is... But floating? Someone have an explanation and comparison to something else?

Basically, semi-floating is what most people are used to. Wheel bolts to the axle flange, a few bolts, and wheels on. This means the axle shaft is handling the weight of the vehicle, as well as the power from the drive line.

Full floating is on larger trucks or heavy duty axles. The axle shaft only handles power from the drivetrain. There is a full outer bearing at the end of the axle tube that bolts to the wheel that actually supports the weight of the truck, through the axle housing. The shaft is then bolted to the wheel through the inner bearing. The coolest thing I think is that you can swap an axle shaft with the wheel still on, and the truck on the ground..wild..
