Depending on the vehicle... Some early trucks came with bolt on CV shafts at both sides of the diff which makes the job of swapping the diff much easier. If yours is splined into the diff, then you will have to disconnect the CV shafts from the diff before removing it. The easiest means of doing this is to pop the upper ball joint. The lower ball joint can be a pain to get free with the CV shaft still in the wheel bearing assembly due to a lack of clearance between the lower control arm & the CV shaft.

 

This is older thread but totally what I am doing tonight. I am attempting to press the differential bushings into a differential I got from a 98 blazer. I have decided to sleep on it because while the old bushings were easy to get out with a ball joint press, I am troubled by putting in the new one. I am having trouble setting up the press to get the new one in, as the lower mount doesn't seem to have enough room for the receiving end of the press between where the bushing comes out and the differential carrier. if I use the larger circle reciever, it is a little too big and I am worried about the bushing pressing in at an angle.

Will the bushing straighten itself out as I push it in or does it have to be perfect?
