Default Front End Issues

2001 Blazer LT 4x4

Very general question. How do I determine what front end parts I need to replace? I have a "pop" on the driver's side when I do a full turn (for example, slowly turning into a parking space) and the steering wheel is pointed to the right (just a little) when I am driving straight. It does not pull to one side or anything. I can usually fix/replace most things on this vehicle but I don't know how to diagnose front end parts problems. I am planning on replacing parts myself and then having an alignment done. Where do I start? Would a shop will give me a free estimate then do the work myself be the way to go? I just don"t feel right having a shop spend the time knowing I'm only going to bring it back for the alignment.
Any help is appreciated. If there is a publication (Chilton's?) to reference?
