could be a wheel bearing gone bad. thats the typical sound for that. or maybe the front end is stuck engaged somehow

Cool growling in front end

i didnt replace the wheel bearing yet. the front end growles in 2 wheel drive. you put it in four wheel and the noise goes away. is the front end locked up. how would you disengage it.. this thing is driving me crazy. could it still be the wheel bearing.

Sounds like either: 1) the vacuum switch for the 4WD actuator under the battery tray is stuck upen, thereby causing constant vacuum and the actuator constantly pulls on the cable that locks the hubs; or 2) the cable is stuck and not moving back to its "unlocked" position.

I'd pull off the battery tray and see what that actuator and cable are doing.
