Talking Jeep Cherokee Steering Shaft

Hey I just got the lasted part or mod I should say for my Blazer. I didn't have much time to go to a junkyard to obtain a jeep steering shaft, so I improvised! I went to eBay and found a guy selling a Jeep Cherokee steering shaft from a 1998+ for $25. I felt I actually spent less than retrieving one in a junkyard because of where I am attending school they do not have much around me.

Okay back on topic, I have been doing countless amounts of research about this mod and I can not understand how there is not a write up for the 2 Gen Blazers as they do for the 1st Gens. I am going to do a write up with pictures and would like to make a video for it to. The reason for doing a separate write up is because of the difference between the two generations and the fact that the current write ups are not as clear as they should. Most of the ones I have read did not indicated if they were installing on a 1st gen or 2nd gen.

THIS WRITE UP WILL ONLY BE FOR THE 2ND GEN BLAZER

I also would like to ask those with 2nd gens to post pictures of their steering shaft mods and stating which year and model you got your steering shaft from. So we can all compare the outcomes of the shafts.
I ask because the current write ups all over this subject are confusing because of people fabricating shafts to work with their Blazer and I am pretty confident that we do not have to take apart the shaft and cut it in order to have it fit.

Maybe the Mods can retitle and stickey your post to the appropreate place I'm looking forward. My mod will be from a late model Astro van as its easier to remove and has two U joints, also dosnt need shortening . . . .I think

Thanks guys,

I am going to post pictures of the steering shaft I have soon when I get back from vacation. I am pretty pure that this shaft will not have to be shortened by any means.

Btw LeWhite all of the jeep shaft utilize U-joint connections and yes the Astro van shaft can work, I just know that they are doing to be a little more bulky than the shaft I have.

Do you guys have some slop in the steering?

excited to do the swap!

In most of the pick ur part yards around here the jeeps' steering wheels are locked. To remove the shaft requires removing something like the inner fender or upper A arm. After you get that off you still have to remove the brake booster. Then I looked at a Astro. The labor difference seemed like an hour and a half on sombody elses junk.

LeWhite, I understand that it can be a little difficult to access the steering shaft on the Jeep Cherokee. I did not go and pull mine out at the junk yard but I know if you can just gain access to the two bolts on each end of the u joints you should be able to pry or tap it off with a hammer. It should not require the column to be free in order to get it off nor over an hour to get it off.

Mr. vls, I have read your post as well as other similar ones for the 1st gens but no one has yet to cover the 2 gen. I know things will be similar but there is a difference with the what shaft you need to use.

@Jake: As they dont allow plazma cutters at pic ur part and the steering colums are locked, it makes it damn neer impossible to remove the shaft. What to do? You cant get at the bolt heads, even if you use a backwards left handed crows foot on a swivel socket with a 4" wobble extention.

I'm still waiting for the rest of your build.

98+ i hope you got the correct part, that only leaves 4 years for the correct one. You want one off an jeep xj cherokee and not off a wj or zj grand cherokees.
