All Blazers from '88ish and up have 28 splines. GU6 is 3.42's. You're in the same boat as I am except my spider gears aren't stripped, just scored and slightly chipped. I don't know if you've started shopping, but be prepared for the sticker shock! New units can go for up to $400+.

EDIT: Also check out the related links below for some light reading.

If you already have an open diff with a good carrier, I would go for an aftermarket LSD or locker (depending on your preference).

Let me tell yo uwhat I did, 4th gen Camaro LSd+ 45$ ring gear spacer from E bay ( comes with the longer bolts) , direct bolts on to old carrier with the same shims in old locations ( no need to adjust). Dont forget to add friction modifier/ limited slip additive.

has anyone heard of modding the G80. I found one site that shows some mods, but I just want to know if this would be worth it. or should I get a different carrier and get a locker?

The G80 is a gov-loc style locker... If there's a (I think 200 RPM) wheel speed difference, at anything less than 20 MPH it locks up... After that the counter weights are spinning outwards, and the diff unlocks, and can't lock at highers speeds... Unless it's been modded or broken.
