Missing parts to rear suspension?

I just got a 98 LS.
I was inspecting the rear brakes and noticed that on the forward side of the axle there is a shallow cup mounted to the leaf spring and a large conical rubber bumpstop kinda thing above it mounted the frame. It looks like a spot for a spring, but none of my manuals or parts places have any springs there. My guess is that it was for aftermarket performance parts that aren't there anymore. It rides nice, but vibrates a little sometimes going 75mph.
Anybody know what's missing?
I can post pics in a few days if necessary...
Thanx!
