1989 S-10 4x4, originally a 4.3L but former owner replaced it with a 2.8L. I took it on a wet, slippery dirt road, now transmission shifts at higher speeds: 2nd gear at 30 mph on a cold start, 24-25 after car warms up, 3rd at 40-45, 4th at 60 mph or so. What type/model transmission does this have, and are there any band adjustments and/or TV cable adjusments, or anything else, that can be done? Any help is appreciated...

why would he have replaced the 4.3L? anyway it is possible that when he replaced the engine he did not replace the tranny with the appropriate one for the 2.8L this will cause the motor to have to work harder to shift the bigger tranny.

 

To replace the 4.3L with a 2.8L, they would also have to replace the transmission due to the bell housing bolt pattern differences between the 90* 4.3L and the 60* 2.8L. With that said, it should be the same 700R4 transmission. If that is so, then there is a TV cable that can be adjusted.

Did this problem start after your offroad adventure?

 

Qumodo: I don't know why the prior owner put in the 2.8 instead of the 4.3. I bought the Blazer about 5 years ago.

swartlkk: yes, this problem started right after my off-road adventure. So, are you saying that I (should) have the 700R4 transmission, and I assume there is no band adjustment, just a TV cable adjustment? Can you direct me to any web site that would show me how to do this? I would be getting some help from a friend that knows transmissions far more than I, but if not, what is the expected cost of having a mechanic do this for me, if you know?

As far as band adjustments, there are no threaded bands to adjust on the 700R4/4L60/4L60E line of transmissions.
