Default Parking Brake

Went to get my Blazer inspected a couple of weeks ago. Failed inspection because the parking brake would not hold. Also because one led in the third brake light was burned out. (???) I have ordered the brake light and will install it when it comes in. The parking brake,,, I have never used it as my Blazer has a manual transmission. Never had the need for it. I have 205,000. miles on the clock and have never needed the parking brake. So, I go thru the owners manual and read up on using the parking brake. Then I go to the shop manual ( Haynes) and read on how to adjust it. Seems simple enough. But it will not hold no matter where it is adjusted to. Start reading more and learn that the rear disk brakes are NOT the parking brake. That the parking brake is a pair of small drum brakes built into the rear disk brakes. Upon taking it apart, I find that everything behind the disk rotors are worn totally out and need to be replaced. Now comes the FUN part,,, paying for the new brake parts. As the parking brake is worn out, that means that the rear disk and brake pads also have to be replaced. Thank you gm for making things so complicated . It would have been much simpler(and cheaper) to make the rear disk brakes the parking brake.
