Default Pitman arm will only go on partway...

Hello, so far I have found some great information from this forum. Thank you for that!

I have removed my steering box in order to replace the pitman arm. I have a MOOG p/n K6255 pitman arm to replace the stock pitman arm. The new arm will not go on anywhere near as far as the original. I have read that the replacement pitman arms do not always go on as far as the original, but there is an 11/16" space remaining and this amount seems excessive to me. I have tried torquing the nut down and also beating it with a 4 lbs hammer to no avail.

A penny for your thoughts. Thank you!

looks like some of the splines are f`d up. take it off and try to file or carefully chisel the grooves straight

Not sure if its a ideal plan..

Heat the pittman up red hot and slide it on. see if swelling it helps.

Sorry, in the picture there is grease all over the splines, they are okay...
I warmed up the pitman arm, not red hot - I could still hold the other end, and hit it a few more times with a hammer. I'm satisfied with it's position now.

Thanks!

Ummmm......sometimes there's one spline that is a locator spline and is much thicker than the others. You did line it up correctly didn't you?

it almost seems normal. everytime i put these things on they never go back on. some ive seen look like that where the dust shield inside the gear box actually isnt big enough to cover all the splines. i just impact them down so far ive been lucky

There were four alignment splines and yep, it's back in the correct spot.

It was definitely impacted down…big hammer, impact wrench, it's all the same as long as it works right?
