Default Proper position of front shocks

I have a 1994 s-10 bLAZER 4X4 WITH v-6 ENGINE. I am going to replace the front shocks. The old presently on the car have the shock piston rod in the upper position. Is this correct? My past jobs with shocks, the piston rod was always on the down side. Please advise?
Thank you, gentlemen
