Rear Differential Leak
Yeah I’ve seen people do the welding trick aswell on youtube. After some thinking I’ve decided I am just going to use some JB Weld SteelStiks and some Permatex Black to seal the leak up as much as I can. My axle is rotted beyond control anyways and I haven’t lost much fluid either. If the time comes where I ever need to access inside the diff at that point I will just swap the whole rear end with a junkyard one in better shape.
If it were me removing that plug, I would try a hammer and chisel. The corner of a chisel set near the outer edge of the plug would probably bite enough to turn the plug.
You will want to clean up the diff as much as possible, otherwise the gasket goop won't stick very well due to the oil.

After further thinking and looking the diff cover is way too spongey at the bottom for anything to hold. With a welder and bolt extractors I will see what I can do. Also, I’ve been looking at some threads about the 7.625 cover; has anyone yet found a cover kit that has a fill plug on the cover itself?
I’m sure thats possible but i’m not sure how much I’d trust that if it wasn’t machined into the cover when it was made.

There are replacement covers with at least drain holes. Most of these are cast aluminum. But i think modifying a standard one would work too. Of course you'd have to put the fill hole at the correct height. I'm sure it could be done. I think I've seen kits too.
I thought about replacing my cover to avoid the hassle of replacing it in order to drain and refill the diff but the cost of the replacement covers was too much for me. I totally forgot about this option for you.
