Yeah my brother swears by going to the edge of the north channel, right at the drop off, and dropping a line in.

 

just looked under the jimmy and found a small puddle of 80-90 oil. Maybe I should have put rtv on that seal? Dammit, this problem wont end, will it?!?
It could just be dripping off from the spillage from when I was filling it up, but I doubt it, not the way it looks. . .too much oil. Maybe I overfilled it? When I filled it, the passenger side was elevated and the front was higher than the back, so after filling, when the car was level, the level of oil would be higher than the plug would have allowed had the car been leveled either front-to-back or side-to-side.

 

Wipe the wet area and watch closely for where the leak is coming from.

Make sure it's not overfull: Pull the fill plug out and check the level.

 

I agree put the truck on level ground and pull the plug... Is the vent hose wet?

 

I forgot to put RTV on the gasket though think that would do it? My feeling is that although I would have applied RTV had I not forgotten, doing so is not required to prevent leaks, but rather just seals and sticks the gasket better. I hope you guys are right, that it's just overfilled. I wont get a chance to check for a few days.

 

did ya remove the rear cover ? Did you change all the fluid ? Its possibly the cover gasket got damaged. Do you see the drip under the cover ?

 

Do not put RTV on the seal. When replacing seals, you should always apply clean oil to the seal and the sealing surface so the seal doesn't burn up from friction of the shaft turning inside it. If you're referring the the cover: gasket only, no RTV there either.

 

Hmmm, the guy in the video you provided put RTV on the outside of the gasket ring where it would contact the axle. I looked, and the whole back hatch, license plate, and bumper are covered in 80-90 oil! I did coat the gasket ring in oil. That all said, must be overfilled, eh? Guess I'll just let it keep hemorrhaging oil all over the body.

 

it really sounds like its over filled... Thats if its coming out of the vent hose while driving ...

DO you see any oil coming from the bottom of the cover? Did you even remove the cover when you did this job ? or did ya just add fluid to replace the lost fluid.

 

Post #8, first paragraph, last sentence: "It probably has some gasket sealer between the seal and the housing to help hold the seal in place, and keep it from leaking, so it might be a little stubborn coming out."

Most good quality seals come with a sealer already on them so adding RTV is unnecessary. It's not mandatory, just "insurance" against leakage. The seal housing is a rather soft metal and usually conforms to the axle housing to prevent leaks.

As Jeff asked, is the fluid leaking from the differential vent hose?

When you had the yoke out, did you inspect the sealing surface for rust or scoring from the old seal? I usually polish it up with 0000 steel wool or very fine wet or dry sand paper. It gives the new seal a smooth finish to ride on. Then use oil or grease on the seal, (or yoke) to lube it before installing the yoke.
