I had a 2001 1.8t jetta, nothing spectacular, stock motor, stock power. I polished the intake manifold, replaced the ****e stock plastic diverter valve with a forge valve (shiny metal), and put on a K&N filter. I was pulled over for a "random check" and the officer asked what the noise was everytime I shifted. I told him, it was the diverter valve. He told me to pop the hood, and saw shiny stuff, he asked where I street race (all the while the baby seat in the back was clearly visible).
Now I probably got the book thrown at me because I asked him how dense your skull has to be to be an officer in my region (I won't name it, locals here will know lol), because only a severely dense head would accuse me of street racing with a stock 4 door sedan with a baby seat and baby on board tags on it. So yeah, he gave me all kinds of illegally modified something or other tickets. I beat them all in court without problems, or a lawyer, but I still lost a day's work in the process.
Some cops are ******, others are cool, but honestly... If I were to dress up my car just to have it look good, I could possibly get fined for it. Truly retarded, but it's the law here...

Well, if street racing's a problem in the region they'll tend to me more strict. I should go for a drive through there and see what they say about my blue interior lights and my CAI... where do you street race? "With a Blazer? Seriously?"
In Sudbury I'll go 2 weeks without seeing a single cop on the road.. the region's too big for the police force we have. I see more Provincial police in town than regional, and the OPP don't have any jurisdiction (spelling?) within city limits... so wtf?!
Some cops are just born pr!cks though. My dad was test driving a K5 Blazer back in the late 70's, he made a left at a spot with a sign saying "No left between 7am-6pm" It was 5:58pm... The cop pulled him over, started asking him about the truck he was driving (which he was trying to get back to the dealership for 6:00, 2 blocks away from where he was), and after 30 mins of the cop being "iterested", he hands my dad a ticket for turning left 2 mins before 6:00pm and leaves. That was COLD.
I hear my dad talking about racing, and the way THEY did it caused less of a ruckus as the way my generation do it. They'd drive 40 minutes north, and go up on this old road that NO ONE USED, and they had set up a 1/4mile straight. People at the end, people at the start (stop the rare car if two people were making a run), NO ONE in the middle to get hit if someone lost it. The cops would show up to make sure there wasn't any booze, then leave them alone. Mind you this was in the 70's. No one got hurt though.
The douchenozzles doing it now are in residential areas, or just in a high traffic volume area, those are the ones running kids on bikes over or killing teenager's in a friends car on the way to a party. I don't sympathize with someone who get nailed for street racing, by doing it, you accept the consequences.

Pat, some of the guys that do it in the residentia l(rural) areas are some what smart about it. your dads way sounds alot like how its done in my area. closest gas station is 15mins away. no cops out in the rural areas to speak of. theres an 8 mile straight away and the guys down there are smart about. just like your dad did it they get over for other cars (if there is any) and they aren't stupid about it either. also the laws in the USA sound less strict as far as racing goes then canada. i completly agree with you on the stupid ones that do it in the high traffic areas. there is a larger chance of injury and alot more people.
*im not trying to turn this into a story,just letting you know how it is in the country.

I know i'm reviving a dead thread, (again) but i've got a very legit question. I live in Salina, KS, and we have a little strip of concrete at the east side of town, everybody calls it "the old airport", and it's basically a strip of concrete that's about 1/8th mile ( i think) and people will mess around on it from time to time. it's not on a street, so would this still be street racing??

Street racing is just stupid. I can understand the thrill, but 98% of the time there is a track nearby where anyone and everyone car race whatever they like! The same thrill, and it's legal. And it's really a shame what they do to those little Jap cars, too. Some of them look absolutely ridiculous. I saw a picture of one that was lowered so that it was practically touching the ground, and there were two mufflers, at least a foot across each one, sticking out from the trunk. They honestly think it looks good. I saw another picture of one of those ricers, and they apparently had nitrous or something, but messed up with it, and the whole back of the car above the tailpipe was all charred and melted.
About 8-10 years ago, I lived in an apartment building in a tiny little town. This apartment building had a gravel driveway that had numerous potholes in it. Well, one of the people there thought he was real cool- he wore his pants so that you could see at least three or four inches of his boxers, and he had a uh... what was it... Honda Civic, I believe. Anyway, he decided, after living there for a while, that he was going to completely remove the shocks from his vehicle. It looked so stupid, and even though he took them off knowing about the driveway having huge potholes, he tried to sue the landlord because the potholes damaged his car because there was literally no suspension. Obviously, it didn't go very well, and he moved.
