My New Spare! has this happened to you?

Years ago I lost my spare after the cable broke.
Today while I was driving to work I saw a tire that looked really good on the side of the road, so I turned around to check it out and it's a new tire (great tread depth) the exact same size as what I have on my Blazer, how exciting!:icon_dance-twist:

I was needing to get a new spare and the Lord provided one.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Cant say that i have been that lucky or unlucky with the cable braking LOL.

Best thing I ever found on the side of the road was a cooler FULL of beer and ICE. It hit the road and exploded beer cans around. I stopped looked for people hiding in the bushed waiting to mug me but found none. So I cleaned up the beer in the road and went home. All in all I got a broken cooler, 15# of ice or so, and 1 case of coors light and a case of bud light.

Forgot to say the cable did break on my dads 99 Xtreme and my 04 CC.

I've never kept underneath mounted spares well... Underneath, so I have t lost one. I DID just aquire a 225/75/r15 on a 4x4 s-series wheel last week. It was sitting on a curb for a week before I decided to pick it up. Had a buddy who needed the tire and the wheel goes in stock so I now have a set of 4 incase I get a second Blazer and it has one of the aluminum wheels I don't like (almost all the stock 4x4 wheels). If it sits a couple days, I'm gonna snag it. I can always scrap a wheel and find someone who needs a tire with tread and holds air.

The lucky I have been as for finding things in the middle of the road was cinderblock brick which I ran over cause there was no room to swerve around it.Luckily It didnt do any damage.

I should add that I also found a brand new steel rim by the side of the road as well, so when I get the money for a new rear tire mount rack...

newguy 02-12-2013 08:32 AM

Found an almost brand new stainless steel grill on and on ramp to the highway

xgiovannix12 02-12-2013 11:33 AM

My dad lost his donut spare off the s10 pickup On the highway.. He went back to get it.

I repaired the cable and put a fullsize spare under there. The donut was shot any ways.
Once I found a pair of car ramps on the side of the road. They must of fell off a trailer or something. I did find a few spares around but none worth having.. I just took the rims for scrap.

thats the worst place for a spare, its always a pet peeve of mine to check them everytime i put a truck on the lift at work and 85% of the time they are flat no one ever bothers to check them. also we get trucks towed in due to the crank getting so rusted it doesnt work.

even worse then that is some of the minivans put them in the dead middle of the vehicle and put a plastic cover over them so you cant even access them to air them up without lowering them down.

i got mine in my bed on both my pick up trucks

My cousin had a Chevy astro minivan I had to try and remove the spare from underneith. It was so rusted it was going to budge.I cut the freekin cable and got it down.I keep my spare in the bed of my truck for easy access.

ol' grouch 03-02-2013 05:58 PM

My thought has always been, "Do you REALLY want to crawl under a loaded truck to get the spare down?".

rexazz2 03-02-2013 06:28 PM

my brother had a flat last winter on his F150 4X4
Slushy sloppy day
Called AAA to change it
He sad the AAA was pissed off because he had to crawl around in the slop to get his full size spare out from under the bed

yeah i dont know why they quit putting them in the body like they do in cars, they are basically in the same place anyways but you can get at them from the inside.

theres so many cable i see broke at work too i always wonder what ditch they flew into.

heres what i was talking about in that other post about how minivans put them in the center of the vehicle, totally covered so you cant even check the air pressure on them.

basically im standing towards the back of the van looking forward.

theres no reason why they couldnt have just dropped the floor down and made that accessible from the inside somehow. just a horrible design, imagine getting that out in the snow, loaded down with family and supplies. what were they thinking?

yup found out my spare was flat when i needed it recently. I sure hope to find a replacement on the side of the road, it makes me nervous to drive too far without one.

ohsofly 03-11-2013 08:10 PM

I found some great chain on the side of the road, its in my garage for pulling stuff now. 2 legnths about 40 feet each of heavy stuff like flatdeck guys use.

I found 4x 18inch wheels with 2 new tires on them too in a scrap tire pile. Someone with too much money must have dumped them.

I found a suitcase full of nice clothing (suit type stuff, not my style) so I gave it to the goodwill store.

I found a 5th wheel pin puller once, and a deck strap bar (truckers tools)

kcb37 03-16-2013 10:43 PM

Suppose the big thing I found was an 8ft fiberglass step ladder and 2 trash cans. Took the ladder and drove home real slow cause I didn't have any straps.

Neb15 I am curious if your nervous about driving with no spare, but you never bothered to check if it even had air before, whats the difference now?
A spare that is never touched is no better then not having one, except of course the added frustration of changing the tire only to find you now have 2 flat tires and are still out of luck.

Neb15 03-17-2013 10:23 AM

Ya not checking the spare out wasn't my best decision.
When I took in my flat tire, a nice screw from a job site, the shop said the cuts in my sidewalls (both front tires on inside) could blow out any time and should be replaced asap. So to answer kcb37, knowing my tires are not so good is why the spare situation is bothering me now.

I found one of those "whirly bird" vents they put on roofs this way one time. Pulled the remains out from underneath the chevelle and kept on going. A few miles later I notice the lights dimming and the temperature rising. It had cut up the crank-water pump-alternator v-belt.

Had a buddy bring me one, and changed it in the gas station parking lot, after having to buy a crappy set of wrenches. I asked half a dozen people with tool boxes in their trucks to borrow a wrench. Apparently the boxes were just for show because they all claimed they didn't have one.

I actually had to jack up my old work van (Peugot Boxer) to get the spare out from under it. I was held in place by a bracket (cage) that was hinged in the front and had a cable in the back.
Wind it down and unhook the cable from the bracket and then I couldn't get it out from under the van. I'm really glad I was at home in my driveway and not on the side of the road.

USMC3782 03-28-2013 10:00 AM

this is why i only drive 2 door blazers with the tire on the back... i hated having to dig under a truck to get a spare.

odat 02-17-2014 07:32 PM

Murphey laws - good news is you have a spare - Bad news is you have two flats

BlazedBolli 02-17-2014 09:21 PM

When I was in High School I borrowed my dad's 1989 Subaru for one winter.
I hit something hidden in the snow in the road that killed one of my tires.
I finally found the spare, and it was under the hood! That thing was rotted out and made it about ten feet before collapsing.
That was a crappy day.

And needless to say, a crappy place for a spare.

Badco 02-22-2014 08:19 PM

This was the spare that came with my Blazer.....

Ain't that a butte! Actually looks exactly like what my moms caravan has. Only good about those tires is there the right height. I have had lots of luck finding excellent full sized spars at pick n pull.

I make it a point to drop my spare and grease the cable at least once a year. Blew a driver rear tire on my high top full sized conversion van a few years back. was doing about 95 MPH and it disintegrated in less then a second. Luckily I didn't roll it, but it made me very tire conscious ever since.
Did find a 24' aluminum scaffold plank on the shoulder once, sold it for $100

grimarr 02-13-2016 04:07 AM

Long time ago I was driving my mom's minivan for a while because I used it to move. I accidentally drove it into a curb and busted one of the tires, and when I went to drop the spare -surprise!- it was gone. Funny thing though, the cable wasn't rusted, just frayed.

Anyway, the best thing I've found on the side of the road so far was a wooden produce crate from the local grocery chain full of corn still in the husk. As it happened, we were on our way to a cookout at the time.
