How much timing advance do YOU use, 4.3 TBI & CPI How much timing advance do YOU use

Hi Guys,
I was reading your posts about distributor advance and want to pass along a trick I learned, about 40 years ago, from an old fleet mechanic. Take your car out on a nice flat stretch of road, get up to 50 or 60, keep it in its' highest gear, press on the gas to induce a load on the motor, but not enough to make it downshift. If it doesn't spark knock, stop and advance the distributor until it does. Then, each time you make a test run, stop and retard the distributor 1 or 2 degrees until it quits spark knocking. Then, retard an extra degree or two to get it just off the edge. If you keep it too close to the edge you may encounter a nuisance spark knock, if you get a tank full of lower octane or inferior gasoline. This technique worked really well on non computerized vacuum advanced distributors. Today it's a whole new ballgame.
