Best year/model for 4x4 build on s10 with V8 swap.
I'm looking for a 4x4 S-10/blazer that I would eventually like to swap a V8 into.
I really would like to know what would be the best set of options to start with. I realize almost everything will have to be changed by the end, but it has to be an S-10 for my purposes.
I'm not real familiar with 4wd components, this is more of a novelty build, and not even going to be a Blazer when it's done. I'd also like to hear opinions on suspension/axle upgrades.

89-92 years. they still have the 700r4. 4l60e needs a computer. Make sure it has a 4.3 v6 tbi. You can reuse the trans, but not off the 2.8.
If you are going for a easy direct swap, pick up a 5.7 tbi out of a full size ranging as close to your year as possible. Everything bolts up (even your stock wiring) and computer can be reused.
info on wiring and computer :
Computers are the same,gm saved some pennys with this. BUT instead they have fuel trim proms in them. (lil black chip) swap the v6 chip for the v8 chip and your done with that. On the wiring, all will bolt up,BUT i remember a sensor or 2 that wouldnt reach the plug so you might have to extend a wire or 2. Big deal.
Make sure you install the 350 tbi injectors. 4.3 ones will work at idle, but anything else it'll run lean. you can even reuse the v6 throttle body. just swap injectors.
You will have to buy a v8 s10 4wd oil pan. your stock one will hit the crossmember.

I'm actually building a 68 AMC 440 wagon. The AMC has a rotten subframe, the whole front end is shot. The wagon itself is not worth doing a stock restoration, but if I put it on a 4x4 chassis it would make a fun toy.
I'm not 100% on doing the V8 swap. This is gonna be a multi stage process. For right now I'd just like to fit it stock and get it drive able. I'd like to upgrade to a SFA so it sits more like a K5 and if I really like it I'm gonna put in an old school carbureted 350 with a stick and keep it for a daily driver.

I think I'm gonna look for a ZR2. It seems to be what people want to swap to. I want to start with something worth driving for a while. I have a K2500 that needs some body work and new front steering put in. So I'll buy a decent donor and drive it until I'm done getting the 2500 solid.
