Default Tailgate/hatch lock?

I have recently come into possession of a 1993 S15 Jimmy and just replaced the tailgate handle/lock which was inoperable. While I was inside the tailgate for the installation, I located the electric window latch release actuator but couldn't see anything that would lock the rear gate and window with the electronic lock system and its remote. So as it is now, I am unable to lock the rear of the vehicle either manually or remotely. Am I looking in the wrong place for this component?

The acuator only unlocks the rear window, it doesn't lock it... As far as locking it manually, it should always be locked as long as the rear window is down and there is no key in the lock. The T-handle on the tailgate shouldn't turn if there is no key in the lock.. If it does turn without a key, you'll probably need a new lock.

The lock I just installed is a new aftermarket unit and it opens both the gate and the window without the key being inserted.

You shouldn't be able to open the window without inserting the key, unless there's something wrong! Can you lift the window without turning the lock? If yes, then the window striker or/and the latch are not well aligned or need to be replaced. But if it's just the lock cylinder that is turning without keys, then it's a faulty one that you installed.

The window latches closed perfectly, so I guess it's just a defective lock
