1994 Blazer LT 4x4 Trouble
[&:]
Hello everyone! I am a new Blazer owner from Canada. We just had the worst snow in 10 years and my new to me Blazer's 4x4 stopped working. I have scanned the forums and am at a loss. My girlfriend and I were out trying the 4x4 for the first time. The vehicle has 184,000kms and has led a very easy life. No tow package and soccer mom driven and garage maintained.
Problem is that after driving in 4Hi and 4Lo with no problems I switched to 2Hi to see the difference between the 4Hi and 2Hi on snowy road (going slow). After going to 2Hi the Blazer would not go back into 4Hi or 4Lo. The lights (push button actuation) for 4Hi and 4Lo would not even light up. There was no mechanical noise just nothing happened. After trying it in neutral and a few things the button started blinking 3 or 4 times and then nothing else happened and nothing has happened since. Again, no mechanical noise or steering trouble etc.
HELP!

I have searched everywhere and lots of the forums sound like part of what the problem is. it makes no mechanical noise though and just seems like the electronic signal is not getting the command to the 4x4 system. That makes me think it's electrical. I am going to check the vacuum lines first and change a fuse. I am also going to disconnect the battery for 15 mins as I read in one thread.
Please respond though if you recognize this problem. We are having record low temps right now as well as lots of snow. Diagnosing in this weather is not fun so your suggestions are extremely helpful.
Thanks in advance!

I guess I have the on the fly switch (sorry not up with the right naming). To switch between 2H, 4H and 4 LO I have a switch on the top right of the dash. I can switch between 2HI and 4HI whilst driving.
When the problem is occuring, I try to switch from 2HI to 4HI and nothing happens. The switch is dead. I can go into 4LO.
By chance, the first time this happened, my battery also needed replacing, so when the battery was replaced the 4HI started working again.
I found a couple of threads on this forum that said disconnecting the battery was a fix.
The problem occured for a second time and sure enough, disconnecting the battery and reconnecting fixed the problem.
I am relieved that I have a reliable fix and am now wondering if there is a way to fix the root cause, so I don't have to go through this with freezing fingers on a fresh powder morning!! :-) or be caught without tools and snowy roads.
Thanks,
Rod.

I just had my 1994 S10 Blazer in the shop and asked them to diagnose the 4x4 problem. I push the button on the dash and nothing happens except sometimes the lights moves to 4H but it is not engaged. The shop told me a need a "4 wheel drive controller from the dealer and it is $538.00" he said it was kinda like a 4 wheel drive shifter. I don't buy it. I think I will try the vacuum lines. Also, what's up with disconnecting the battery? Can someone please let me know.
Thank You
