*Moved to a new thread in the 1st Gen Tech section* - The thread you posted in is for linking to helpful threads and not for asking for technical help. As such, I have moved your post to a new thread in the appropriate section.

Threads about problems with 4wd are VERY plentiful around here. Check out the Tech Article (DIY) section for some reading material on the most common problems with the 4wd systems found in these trucks. To give you some direction, your problem is likely a faulty encoder, but diagnose the issue before replacing anything.

when i try and put it in 4 hi or 4 lo in any gear but neutral it wont do a thing no lights or nothing but sometimes it will work just perfect and then sometimes even when i put it in neutral i can push either button and it wont do a thing, all vacuum is good the actuator for the hubs under the battery case is good, i recently changed the vacuum switch on the front diff and the vacuum switch on the top of the transfer case, all the fuses are good, and i changed the electronic push button on the dash, dose anyone know if this would be either the TCCM or the Encoder moter on the transfer case. any input would help thanks.

Are you sure naybe one (or more) of the vacuum lines is not loose? Electrical connections good and tight? Also check for a bad wire.

well I did some more searching and apparently after the computer reads too many errors it goes into (safe mode) and will only work when in neutral. I'm thinking about setting this thing on fire and walking away....

Did you find and clean the electrical connections at the TCCM (under the dash near the center)?

Did you check for codes by grounding terminal J in the ALDL under the driver side dash (check troublecodes.net for the ALDL pinout and the Tech Article section for the NV233 diagnostic thread).

ok thanks man i will try that tomorrow i also cleaned the connections on the plug for the encoder motor with contact cleaner, everything else is new, the new things i put on are: encoder motor, vacuum actuator under the battery, vacuum switch on the transfer case, and 4x4 switch on the front differential. I also looked at the vacuum lines and haven't found any leaks. thanks for the quick reply, this forum really helps allot its a great thing.
